Party Skeletons and Confetti

12/9/2018

A little Sunday afternoon work to get the Neon battle closer to what I want.

Periodically, the skeletons will cheer and confetti will fall from the sky during the fight. Even dead folks can't help cheering for Neon while she's performing!

I've been listing to Death By Glamour from Undertale while I work on this fight. It's starting to get a little repetitive, but it helps me focus on the scene I want to get out there, so it's staying on my playlist for a while...

Neon Battle Rough Draft

I made a veeeeeeery rough draft of how I imagine the Neon battle going. Most of these sprites are really sloppy, and honestly this is more of a mock-up for my own reference moving forward.

The core of the battle is going to be that Neon teleports around, trading places with her holograms as she attacks you.

Tons of work to do on this one. I'm thinking maybe a week's worth? I'm honestly not sure. Getting these sprites to not look terrible is a big one. Also I need a proper background, there's going to be a ton of events that need triggering...

Lots of work basically. I'll be posting here as I make progress.

Arrowanas

Today I built out the second mission in the second world. Once you dive into the sea, you'll see some odd looking fish swimming around. They're called Arrowanas, and they want to help you navigate the ocean.

This idea actually came about because of the floaty underwater physics I implemented. It allowed me to make some long jumps, but I quickly realised this meant the player can't see where they're going.

The solution was to create this segment, where the Arrowanas help guide an otherwise blind Hue to nearby platforms. Lots of leaps of faith here.

The catch is that grey Arrowanas will give the player false directions. These almost always lead to you falling off screen.

Luckily, a little color will help guide your way.
I'm a little nervous this mission might be too easy, but on the other hand, there should be some easier missions. Ideally, I'd like anyone to be able to complete Chromatic Hue, while still keeping some tough-as-nails challenges for more advanced players looking to 100% the game.

Just Sharky Things

Tonight I got the shark quest set up. There's a few bugs left over, but it's all functional, so we're calling that tonight's stopping point.

The mission will start with a request from the shark himself. He wants a fin so he can go back to doing tours around the ocean. He asks you to find anything triangular and grey he can use as a new fin.

A visit to the nearby soup-stand will reveal the shark's fin's fate. After sufficiently annoying the guy who runs the stand, he'll send his robot after Hue.
The soup-bowl robot moves based on Hue's movements, so getting it to line up with the pizza is a relatively easy task. Once it shoots a grey blob at the pizza, it will turn it grey and the pizza will hop to its new home.
Talk with the shark again, and he'll offer you a reward for all your hard work - A tour to a little island in the middle of the ocean with an All World Gem on it.
Hop on the shark's back to head to the island and collect your prize. I still have a couple of bugs and lines of dialogue to add to make everything work right, and you'll notice the ocean is layered over the menu on the bottom of the screen right now. Little things like that need to be fixed or tightened up, but the entire event is playable, which is pretty cool.

The shark's going to be responsible for one other mission, actually. More on that once it's been built into the game.
